Let's Play Pretend

Today my son wore a pirate hat to town
and called himself Captain
and said raspberry instead of strawberry 
and sang Over the Ocean Blue. 

And tomorrow he will wear a wooden smile
and call himself whole
and say I hate you instead of I love you.
But he will still sing Over the Ocean Blue

and remember a time,

when he didn't have to play pretend.
